Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
Nucleus
Controls all the activities of the cell. It contains the genes (DNA) on the chromosomes that carry the instructions for making the proteins needed to build new cells or new organisms
Cytoplasm
A liquid gel in which most of the chemical reactions occur
Cell membrane
Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell
Mitochondria
Where most of the energy is released during respiration
Ribosomes
Where protein synthesis takes place, making all the proteins needed in the cell
Eukaryotic cells
Multicellular and they have their DNA enclosed in a nucleus
Prokaryotic cells
Single cells and their DNA is not enclosed in a nucleus
Cell wall
Made of cellulose that strengthens the cell and gives it support
Chloroplasts
Contain the green substance called chlorophyll which absorbs light energy to make food by photosynthesis
Permanent vacuole
Filled with cell sap to keep the cells rigid to support the plant
Plasmids
Small, circular bits of DNA
