Evaporation and Transpiration Flashcards
Effect of evaporation on plants
When water evaporates from the soil, plants may experience a shortage of water, which can lead to wilting if not properly managed. This limits the plant’s ability to take up water, affecting its growth and health.
Effect of transpiration on plants
Excessive transpiration can lead to water loss, making the plant vulnerable to drought stress. If too much water is lost, it can cause the plant to wilt or even die if water is not replenished.
Transpiration
The exhalation of water vapor through the stomata
Evaporation
The process of turning from a liquid to a vapor
Stomata adaptations for evaporation and transpiration
Plants close stomata during hot or dry conditions to reduce water loss. Sunken stomata in pits create humidity around pores, minimizing water loss.
Waxy cuticles adaptations for evaporation and transpiration
Leaves often have a waxy coating to prevent excess evaporation
Leaf adaptations for evaporation and transpiration
Smaller, needle-like, or hairy leaves reduce surface area and water loss
