Animal and Plant Cells Flashcards
Cell
Basic structural unit of living organisms
Nucelus
Controls the cell’s activities
Cell membrane
It’s permeable and so controls the movements of substances in and out of the cell
Cytoplasm
It is the medium for chemical reaction. It provides a platform upon which other organelles can operate within the cell. All of the functions for cell expansion, growth and replication are carried out in the cytoplasm of a cell.
Vacuole
Used to Store Molecules
Mitochondria
Powerhouse of the cell - generates most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell’s biochemical reactions.
Chloroplast
contains the green pigment, chlorophyll which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
Cell wall
provides structure and protection
Ribosomes
used for translating information stored in DNA into proteins that are essential for the cell’s survival and function
Chromosome
Thread-like structure found in the nucleus carrying genetic information made of DNA and protein.
Organelle
small structures within the cytoplasm that carry out functions necessary to maintain homeostasis in the cell.
