Animal and Plant Adaptations Flashcards
Define ‘environment’
everything in and around an area
What is an ‘organism’?
an animal or plant or anything that is alive
What are ‘basic needs’?
anything needed to survive
Define ‘climate’
the general weather condition of a place
What is an ‘adaptation’?
a characteristic that helps living things survive in their environment
Define ‘structural adaptation’
An outward physical or bodily characteristic of an animal or plant that helps it adapt to its environment
Give an example of a structural adaptation.
If you named something that is a part of the animal’s body or a part of the actual plant. . . YOU ARE CORRECT!!! An example: a duck’s webbed feet. The webbed feet help the duck move through the water and are a part of the duck’s body.
Define ‘camouflage’
A adaptation that allows an organism to survive by allowing it to blend into its environment.
Define ‘mimicry’
An adaptation that allows an organism to survive by allowing it to look very much like another object or organism.
Define ‘behavioral adaptation’
The things an organism DOES to survive in its environment.
Give an example of a behavioral adaptation.
If you named something an organism DOES. . . you are CORRECT!!! Examples are hibernation, skunks spraying a predator, bees stinging, opossums pretending to be dead, ivy climbing toward the sunlight
Define ‘migration’
A survival behavior in which some animals move in response to changes in the environment
Define ‘physiological adaptation’
An adaptation that results in automatic responses to the environment, such as change in heart rate or growth of fur or hair when the weather changes. This adaptation is not controlled by the animal or plant. GOD alone makes this happen.
What type of environment would most likely have plants with spines, such as a cactus?
an environment that is hot and dry
What type of environment would most likely have plants with flexible parts and air pockets to enable floating, such as a water lily?
an environment with a body of water, such as a lake or pond
What type of environment would most likely have plants with large, wide leaves able to capture a large amount of sunlight?
an environment that gets very little sunlight
What type of environment would most likely have plants and trees with waxy needles, such as a pine tree?
an environment that receives a large amount of snow
What type of environment would most likely have plants with drip tips, so water could efficiently drain off the plant and leaves?
an environment that gets an extreme amount of water
What type of bird beak is created by God to crack seeds?
short, thick, cone-shaped beak (example: finch)
What type of bird beak is created by God to tear meat?
sharp, curved beak (example: hawk)
What type of bird beak is created by God to get insects under the bark of trees?
long and chisel-like beak (example: woodpecker)
What type of bird beak is created by God to drink nectar from flowers?
long, slender bills (example: hummingbird)
What type of bird beak is created by God to strain water for small plants and animals to eat?
long, flat bill (example: duck)
What type of bird beak is created by God to catch fish by spearing them in the water?
spear-like bill (example: kingfisher)
What type of bird beak is created by God to eat insects and peck on the ground?
thin, pointed bills (example: warbler)
What type of bird beak is created by God to scoop fish out of the water?
bills with a special bag underneath (example: pelican)
What type of bird beak is created by God to catch insects while in flight?
beaks that open wide (example: whip-poor-will)
