Angular Motion Flashcards
1
Q
angular motion
A
when a body or part of a body moves in a circle or part of a circle about an axis of rotation
2
Q
axis of rotation
A
an imaginary line about which a body or part of a body turns
3
Q
longitudinal axis
A
- from head to foot
- rotation around it causes a twisting action in diving, gymnastics or figure skating
4
Q
frontal axis
A
- from the front to the back of the body
- rotation causes a cartwheel action
5
Q
transverse axis
A
- from the left to right side of the body
- rotation around it causes ‘somersault action’
6
Q
how is angular motion created ?
A
an eccentric force which passed outside the centre of mass, also known as torque
7
Q
moment of inertia (l)
A
- reluctance of a body to change its state of angular motion or rotation
- l = Σ Mr², measured in kgm²
- (r = distance of the mass from the axis of rotation)
8
Q
angular velocity (w)
A
- rate of change in angular displacement (d) per unit of time
- w = d/t, measured in rad/s
9
Q
angular momentum (L)
A
- amount of angular motion of a rotating body
- L = low, measured in kgm²/s
