  • Marcher earldoms (chester, hereford and shrewsbury)
  • Royal demesne - land owned specifically for kings crops and animals (labour service)
  • Reward- he could reward people with land (especially daed peoples land from hastings and recorded in doomsday book 1085

-Williams had promised Edwin he could marry his daughter edith (he didn’t), and mortar was replaced as earl - so they were both pretty mad
-William knew and sent an army up north to start warring straight away-
they both surrendered immediately :0

  • edgar came across from scotland but william just did the same thing and stayed harrying
  • Edwin retreated and a castle was built in york as a warning

hereward the wake

A

1070-71

  • hereward robbed peterbourlgh abbey and stashed all the treasure in the isle ely (surrounded by marshland)
  • multiple times they tried to get across but sunk due to heavy armour
  • eventually it worked and they were exiled, imprisoned, mutilated and killed

  • when the earls were drunk, they wanted power back
  • it was under prepared and not well thought out
  • Walteof snitched to lanfranc who was regent at the time and so was pardoned
  • others were imprisoned

  • did not come from the danelaw and did not understand much of the Scandinavian language
  • murdered two followers of Gospatrick ( important aristocrat to the north ) and then killed Gospatrick too
  • was a tyrant- taxed heavily and created his own laws to only minimise any rivals
