angina Flashcards
What is angina?
heart temporarily deprived of oxygen
3 pain mediators released when cardiac cells become ischaemic
adenosine, bradykinin, potassium
types of angina
Stable (angina of effort)
Unstable (brittle)
Variant (Prinzmetal’s)
cause of stable angina
atherosclerosis of coronary arteries
triggers of stable angina
exercise
cold weather
excitement
what is Unstable angina associated with?
disruption of pre-existing atherosclerotic plaque or superimposition of a thrombus
treatment of stable angina
Aspirin - to prevent platelet aggregation statins - lipid lowering drug organic nitrates ca channel blocker K channel activator
how do organic nitrates work?
by dilating peripheral capacitance vessels thus reducing venous return and hence workload. They also decrease afterload - the force that heart has to generate to eject blood from ventricles
