Angina Flashcards
What class of drugs is used to treat effort-induced angina?
Beta Blockers-reduce the frequency and severity of angina attacks
Which class of drugs should NOT be used in vasospastic angina?
Beta Blockers
What combination of drugs can be used with patients with classic angina (effort-induced angina) to increase exercise endurance and tolerance?
Beta blockers with nitrates!
These are contraindicated in patients with asthma, diabetes, severe bradycardia, peripheral vascular disease, and COPD
Why should a beta blocker not be stopped abruptly?
May cause rebound angina, MI, and hypertension. Should taper off over 2-3 weeks
How might you treat a patient with variant angina caused by spontaneous coronary spasm, either at work or at rest?
Nitrate or CCB (nifedipine)
Beta blockers are contraindicated!!!!
Treatment of Angina with no Co-morbidities?
Long-acting nitrate
Beta Blocker
CCB
Treatment of Angina + Recent MI?
Long-acting nitrate
Beta Blocker
Treatment of angina + Asthma/COPD
Long-acting nitrate
CCB
Treatment of angina + HTN?
Beta Blocker
CCB
Long-acting nitrate less effective
Treatment of angina + diabetes?
Long-acting nitrate
CCB
Treatment of angina + Chronic Renal Disease?
Long-acting nitrate
CCB
Beta Blocker less effective
History suggests vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal) how should you treat patient?
CCB
Long-lasting nitrate therapy
For what conditions are Beta Blockers not recommended?
asthma, COPD, diabetes, symptomatic peripheral vascular disease, first-degree heart block
