anger management programmes:
A
- a cognitive behavioural therapy which helps someone to control anger outbursts
- developed by Novaco in 1975
- based on the assumption that anger is a primary cause of violent criminal acts
- once offenders learn to control their anger, bad behaviour in prison will decrease
- this ability to control aggressive behaviour will also impact on recidivism rates and reduce the chance of criminal reoffencinding

what are the three steps involved in anger management programmes?
A
- cognitive preparation - where group members are helped to recognise their own anger patterns that trigger aggressive behaviour
- skill acquisition - where individuals learn behavioural and cognitive coping strategies, such as relaxation and assertion, to help them control their feelings
- application and practice - where individuals try out the newly learnt skills in roleplays and actual scenarious that are positively reinforced for appropriate non-aggressive responses

- relaxation techniques - slowing down increased heart rate due to anger
- cognitive restruction - retraining thought patterns to more desirable thought patterns
