• Involves identifying triggers for anger & techniques on calming down/ dealing with the situation
• Not to prevent anger but to recognise & manage it

Stage 1 of anger management
Cognitive preparation
- the offender reflects on past experience
- learn to identify triggers & how they irrationally interpreted a situation
- redefining the situation as non-threatening
Stage 2 anger management
Skills acquisition
- offenders introduced to a range of techniques to help deal with anger
Skills
• cognitive - positive self talk
• behavioural - assertiveness training to communicate more effectively
• physiological- methods of relaxation
Stage 3 anger management
Application practice
- offenders are given the opportunity to practice skills in a carefully monitored environment
- if the offender deal w role play successfully they r given positive reinforcement
Strength
- benefits outlast behaviour modification
• AMP tackles causes of offending (cognitive process)
• gives offenders new insight into the cause of their criminality allowing them to self discover ways of managing themselves out side prison
Limitation
- success depends on individual factors
Howells
• found pp in an AMP had little overall impact when compared to a control group w no treatment
• however progress showed intense levels of anger before AMP & offenders who were motivated to change
Limitation
- expensive, lengthy
• ppl have to want to be involved
• highly trained specialists
