Prevent hooking up hose to wrong gas

Precision, non-precision
Precision is most common for iso and sevo
What is the oxygen flush valve and what should you never do?
Direct connection from high pressure to breathing systems
Never use flush valve on non-rebreathing system hooked up to patient
What are the two main breathing systems used in vet med?

How can you tell the difference between old and new soda lime?
New: crumbly, white, bitter taste
Old: hard, chalky, purple, salty taste
What is the purpose of unidirectional valves?
To prevent rebreathing of CO2
What is the ideal size of breathing/reservoir bag?
6 x tidal volume of patient
What is a main source of dead space in breathing system?
Y piece
What is the purpose of the negative pressure relief valve?
To allow room air into circuit

Jackson-Rees system (non-rebreathing)

High fresh gas flow rate (usually 200-300ml/kg/min)
What are the two types of scavenging systems?
Active: provides negative pressure e.g. Vacuum
Passive: gas moves freely e.g. Absorption devices
