anesthesia Flashcards
define sedation
rousable state of central nervous system depression
what 3 things form the triad of anaesthesis/liverpool triad?
- hypnosis
- analgesia
- muscle relaxation
what is the ideal stage/plane of anaesthesia?
stage 3 - plane 1 or 2 (NOT 3)
describe what you would observe if a patient was in too deep a plane of anaesthesia
ventilation: jerky
pupil: dilated
eye: central
reflexes: corneal reflex but no palpebral reflex
what are the 3 main things to consider before putting and animal under GA?
- stabilise pre-existing conditions (fluids, analgesia, anxiolysis)
- withhold food and water (6-8hours)
- laboratory testing
what are the 4 phases of general anaesthesia?
which of these stages has the greatest risk of complication? (**)
pre-medication
induction **
maintenance
recovery **
describe the following ASA categories:
I
II
III
I - normal healthy patient
II - patient with mild systemic disease (not limiting normal function)
III - patient with severe systemic disease (does limit normal function)
describe the following ASA categories
IV
V
IV - patient with severe systemic disease that is a constant threat to life
V - moribund patient that is not expected to survive without the procedure
why is hypothermia a major concern in the first 3 hours post GA?
hypothermia can reduce the drug metabolism in a patient and therefore prolong recovery
