anemias Flashcards
some causes of sideroblastic anemia
TB drugs (isoniazid, pyrazinamide and cycloserine), chronic alcoholism, ALA synthetase deficiency, lead poison, myelodysplastic syndrome, copper def, zinc toxicity.
microangiopathic hemolytic anemia would show what on peripheral smear?
schistocytes (as in HUS)
pt comes in with hematuria, jaundice, and has been working out super hard or marching
traumatic hemolytic anemia due to prolonged repeated compressed tiny blood vessels. may also cause rhabdomyolysis which can be differentiated from hemolytic anemia thru ck enzyme levels.
itp is
isolated thrombocytopenia. thought to be caused by platelet distruction or inhibition of platelet production by way of antibodies.
ptt means
partial thromboplastin time. tells you how long it takes for blood to clot.
medications that cause agranulocytosis (low leukocyte/wbc’s)
PTU, methimazole
Fanconi’s anemia
congenital. leads to pancytopenia, and macroctyic anemia.
first line therapy for fanconi
androgens and hematopoetic growth factors.
