How do we define anemia?
A
Reduction in circulating RBC mass, whether that is reduction in number or size

Patient with anemia will present with signs and symptoms of what?
A
Hypoxia

What are some common symptoms of hypoxia?
A
Weakness, fatigue, dyspnea, pale conjunctiva and skin, and angina if heart is being oxygenated

What 3 lab values will we use when trying to determine RBC mass?
A
HgB, HCT, and RBC count

What is normal HgB for males and females and what how do we define anemia with HgB?
A
13.5-17.5, so less than 13.5
12-16, so less than 12

What is Mean Corpuscle Volume and how will I use it to classify anemia?
A
MCV is the size of a RBC. Normal is 80-100. So, less than 80 will be microcytic anemia and greater than 100 will be macrocytic anemia
