Anemia Due To Underproduction Flashcards
How do we characterize anemia due to underproduction?
Decreased production of RBCs by the bone marrow and there is a corrected low reticulocyte count.
3 major etiologies of underproduction?
Anything causing micro or macrocytic anemia
Renal failure because low EPO
Damage to bone marrow precursor cells
How does Parvovirus b19 cause underproduction anemia?
Infects progenitor RBCs and temporarily stops productions of RBCs. This is especially intense anemia when you have a preexisting condition with no real reserve.
What is going on with anaplastic anemia? What 3 things can cause it? What does biopsy show of the bone marrow?
Damage to the HSC resulting in pancytopenia.
Drugs/chemical, viral infections, and autoimmune
Empty fatty marrow
How do we best define myelophthisic process?
Pathologic process, like metastatic cancer, that replaces bone marrow so blood production is impaired and there is pancytopenia.
