Anemia Due To Underproduction Flashcards

1
Q

How do we characterize anemia due to underproduction?

Q

How does Parvovirus b19 cause underproduction anemia?

A

Infects progenitor RBCs and temporarily stops productions of RBCs. This is especially intense anemia when you have a preexisting condition with no real reserve.

Q

What is going on with anaplastic anemia? What 3 things can cause it? What does biopsy show of the bone marrow?

A

Damage to the HSC resulting in pancytopenia.
Drugs/chemical, viral infections, and autoimmune
Empty fatty marrow

Q

How do we best define myelophthisic process?

A

Pathologic process, like metastatic cancer, that replaces bone marrow so blood production is impaired and there is pancytopenia.
