What is Epoetin alfa?
used for treatment of anemia assosiated with end stage renal disease and HIV anemia
What must you have to take Epoetin alfa?
adequate body iron stores and bone marrow function
Iron toxicity can be from?
accidental overdose usually in children
What is the first indication of iron toxicity?
stomach pain/nausea/vomitting because the stomach lining becomes ulcerated
What happens as iron passes deeper into the body?
becomes toxic to the brain which can lead to CNS issues such as coma and death
Treatment to iron toxicity?
chelation therapy that binds to the metal and carries it out of the body before it harms the body . it turns it into inactive complex and excreted by kidneys
suctions + airway maintenance
correction of acidosis
control of shock and dehydration with IV fluids
What is the main iron supplement?
Ferrous Sulfate
Iron adverse effects
GI upset
black tarry stools
stained teeth
anaphylaxis and hypotention(IV)
What is Folic acid used for ?
folic acid deficiency
pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects
malabsorption
Folic acid should not be given until?
the underlying cause of anemia is determined because it can mask some types of anemia
