Androgyny - AO3 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a PECS paragraph for androgyny?
A
- P: Strength = gender identity is measured quantitively
- E: Bem’s numerical approach is useful when it is necessary to quantify a DV
- C: Spence (1984): a qualitative approach may represent gender identity better. One compromise = combine different scales. E.g Personal Attribute Questionnaire - another dimension to Bem’s masculinity-femininity dimension
- S: Quanititative together with qualitative - useful for studying different aspects of gender identity

Q
What is a strength of androgyny?
and little counterpoint
A
- P: Strength = BSRI has been found to be both valid and reliable
- E: Development of the scale: 50 males and 50 females judging 200 traits. Top 20 in each case were used. Piloting with 1000 students showed the BSRI reflected their gender identity (validity)
- E: Follow up study: smaller sample of the same students produced similar scores when the students were tested a month later (test-retest reliability)
- L: BSRI had a degree of both validity and reliability at the time it was developed
Lacks temporal validity - sterotypical traits
3
Q
What is a limitation of androgyny?
A
- P: Limitation = people may lack insight into their gender identity
- E: Gender is a social construct which may be more open to interpretation than sex
- E: Questionnaire’s scoring system is subjective as people’s application of the 7-point scale may differ
- L: BSRI may not be a scientific way of assessing gender identity

Q
What is another strength of androgyny?
A
- P: Strength = it links to wellbeing
- E: Bem emphasised that androgynous individuals are more psychologically healthly as they can deal with situations that demand a masculine, feminine, mixed response
- E: Some argue that people with a greater proportion of masculine traits are better adjusted as these are more highly valued in Western culture (Adams and Shere 1985)
- L: Having more masculine traits may have advantages for psychological health, at least in the West
