Androgyny Flashcards
what is androgyny
personality possessing both male and female traits
eg tyson fury being a boxer but a loving father
androgyny and psychological well-being
Bem argued that androgynous people are more likely to be more comfortable and that they should adopt those opposite sex traits to how it fits their personality and they can handle situations more flexibly than an androgynous person
What are sex role stereotypes
set of shared beliefs of expectations that people in society hold to what is expected behaviour
How sex role stereotypes come about
Through media parents or modelling
learnt early on how the different genrders are meant to behave
can lead to discrimination
Research evidence for sex role stereotypes
media reinforcement
study on how sex role stereotypes were potrayed in TV adverts
men were in more professional settings females were in more domestic settings
suggests media reinforce ideas of sex role stereotypes
Research evidence for sex role stereotypes
(baby in yellow suit)
The study had a baby in a yellow suit told a third of the participants it was a boy and a third that it was a girl the rest they didntn’t identify the gender of the baby labeled as the girl they gave it toys like dolls when the baby was identified as a boy they gave it the plastic toy when no gender was identified the females interacted with the baby more but thehy also spontaneously decided on the gender of the baby on how it looked physically. Suggests that adults treat boy and girl babies differently and so teach the same thing to children
research evidence on sex role stereotypes
(parents ops 24hrs)
Asked parents to describe baby after 24hrs of baby being born. If boy they said strong words eg strong and if girl they said softer words eg soft
suggests parents stereotype their child with SRS from very early despite no stereotypical behaviour shown so teach these stereotypes to children
what is bem sex role inventory BSRI
a way to measure androgyny with a mixture of male-female and distractors all to rate them on a 7-pointy Likert scale
how to know what trait you have on the BSRI
u were masculine if (high masculine score, low feminine score)
feminine if(low masculine score, high feminine score)
Androgynous(if both masculine and feminine scores are high)
undifferentiated(low scores on both masculine and feminine)
BSRI AO3: lack validity
-found to lack validity
-the link between androgyny and psychological wellbeing may be due to an intervening variable- self-esteem
adjectives in BSRI are socially desirable so would in turn have higher self-esteem
-lacks internal validity and that high self esteem might be the actual reason for psychological wellbeing
BSRI AO3: response bias
- been criticised for response bias
