Andrade Flashcards
Aim
whether doodling assisted information processing by increasing attentiveness or by enhancing memory.
Research method
Lab experiment
Research design
Independent measures design
Sample
40 participants(mostly women) that were chosen through opportunity sampling. Ages were 18-55 years
How long was the telephone call?
2.5 minutes at a recorded speed of 227 words per minute.
Independent variable?
Whether they doodled or not
Dependent variable?
Responses to the 2 tasks to measure recall.
What was the monitoring task?
Participants were told that they would be tested on the names of the partygoers.
What was the surprise task?
They were tested on the names of places mentioned.
How was the final score achieved?
Correct names minus number of false alarms.
No. of names of partygoers?
8
No. of people who didn’t attend?
3 and a cat
No. of places names mentioned?
8
What were participants in the doodle group given?
A4 sheets with alternating rows of squares and circles, ten per row. Wide margin on the left to record targeted info.
What were the participants in the control group given?
A lined paper.
What was the results for the doodling group?
36.3 shapes were shaded from a range of 3-110.
Results for monitoring task of control group?
Recalled a mean of 7.1 names, 5 false alarms.
Results for monitoring task of doodling group?
Recalled a mean of 7.8 names, 1 false alarms.
Overall result?
Doodling participants recalled 29% more than the mean of control group.
Conclusions
- Doodling helps concentration on primary task.
- Doodle group performed better on both tasks bcz either doodling affected attention or helped improve memory by encouraging deeper info processing.
Application to real life
When listening to a lecture, doodling might be advantageous. However, deliberately drawing something may be counterproductive.
