A toga (a long white robe draped over the shoulder and down to the feet)

A stola (a long dress)
Where did patricians live?
A patrician house in a town was called a DOMUS and in the country was a villa.
What was the walled garden called in a domus?
The peristylium
What was the bedroom called in a domus?
Cubiculum.
How was a domus decorated?
The walls were decorated with paintings and the floors with mosaics.
Who were the plebeians?
The plebeians were the poor, who made up the vast majority of the population.
What were the jobs that plebeians normally had?
They normally farmed, worked in trades and served in the army.
What was the plebeians payment?
They were given a DOLE payment of free grain so they would support the rule of the patricians.
What did plebeian men wear?
Men wore a tunic to their knees.
What did plebeian woman wear?
Women wore a plain stola.
Where did plebeians live?
They lived in apartment blocks called insulae.

They were usually 5 storeys high, the ground floor had shops or workshops that opened to the street. They higher you went the smaller the apartments get.
How was there a danger to fire in the insulae?
Because they used wood burning stoves for cooking, fire could easily spews through the insulae, the upper floors were made of wood.

They would normally work in mines, on farms, in homes, cooking or looking after children.

Between to age of seven to twelve they attended a LUDUS, where they learned reading, writing and arithmetic.

They attended a grammaticus, where they learned history, grammar, geometry and literature.

An oratory, to learn the art of public speaking.

At the age of 20, and served for 25 years.
What were soldiers often employed to do when not on campaign?
To build public works such as aqueducts, bridges, defensive walls and roads.
