Greek Influence
The Greek influenced their ideas about mythology and religion, where the entire Greek pantheon of Gods is adopted, only altering most of the names. They also adopted very similar ideas about the afterlife and the underworld.
Pluto & Proserpina
The Roman ruler of the underworld was Pluto and his wife was Proserphina
Plutonium
The entrances to the underworld- usually caves, the Romans would build a temple around the entrance
Virgil
One of the greatest poets in the western world- most notably, he wrote The Aeneid
The Aeneid
The Aeneid narrates the journey of Aeneas, a Trojan hero, as he flees Troy’s destruction and seeks to establish a new homeland in Italy. Along the way, he faces various challenges and encounters gods and mythical creatures, ultimately fulfilling his destiny to lay the foundation for Rome.
Aeneas
A trojan hero devoted to the gods- the main character of The Aeneid
Dido
Queen of Carthage, and Aeneas’ love interest during the epic poem. When Aeneas leaves her, builds a funeral pyre and speaks a curse where her people will never like him or take favor in him. Aeneas meets her once again in the underworld in the fields of mourning.
Book 6 of the Aeneid
The book that details Aeneas’ journey to the underworld
The Sibyl of Cumae
A prophet who details to Aeneas how to get to the underworld, and states that she must be his guide
The Golden Bough
An item that Aeneas must find to be able to return from the underworld- if he is able to find it, it is a sign from the gods to proceed
Gates of Dis
The very first barrier in the underworld, a gateway to the river Acheron
The River Acheron
The river that the dead must cross in able to proceed to the underworld, ferried by Charon
