Who were the slaves?
Slaves were people who were children born into slavery, were captured in war, individuals who were sold or self-sold or infants who were abandoned at birth.
How many senators were there?
By the end of the 1st century, there were 300.
How were senators appointed?
During the Roman Republic, people who were censors would appoint new senators. Later, in the empire, the emperor controlled who was appointed as a senator.
What percent of the population in Rome were slaves?
The percentage was around 10% but it could’ve been up to 20%.
What jobs did slaves do?
Slaves could have jobs anywhere for almost anything including in mines, private households, farms, and in the gladiator ring.
How were slaves freed?
Slaves could be freed outright by their masters, buy their freedom if they were allowed to work in the economy for some time, and win it through outstanding performance as a gladiator.
Who were the gladiators?
The gladiators were a group of (usually men) people who fought against each other to provide entertainment. They were often slaves.
