Legendary founder of Rome
Argued with his brother on the site of their new city, so he started to build walls on the Palatine hill on his own.
Implemented senators and initial city was populated by criminals, exiles, and runaway slaves.
Led the abduction and rape of the Sabine women.
Supposedly died around 717 BCE.
Remus
Legendary brother of Romulus, founder of Rome.
Made fun of his brother’s city wall and then fell off of it and died
Lucius Tarquinius Superbus (Tarquin the Proud)
The 7th and last king of Rome from 534 - 510 BCE.
Belonged to an Etruscan clan.
Tyrannical
Established Rome as the head of the Latin League.
Died in 495 BCE in exile
Lucretia
Wife of the great nephew of Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, the last king of Rome.
Was raped at knifepoint, and chose to commit suicide.
Seen as the moral ideal for a woman.
Lars Porsenna
Etruscan king who sieged Rome in 508 BCE, shortly after the exile of the last king and start of the Republic.
Brennus
A Gallic king who attacked and occupied Rome in 390 BCE.
Coined the phrase “Woe to the Vanquished”
Was defeated in 365 BCE.
Hannibal (Barca)
Carthaginian comander during the 2nd Punic War with Rome
One of the greatest military genius’s in ancient history
Crossed the Alps with his army to attack cities in Italy.
Was avoided by Romans in battle and eventually forced to return to Carthage without many real victories.

Carthaginian general during the 1st Punic War

Marcus Claudius Marcellus
270-208 BCE Roman general during the 2nd Punic War. Known as "The Sword of Rome" Fought Hannibal in Southern Italy and captured Syracuse. Died in an ambush.
Gaius Marius
157 BCE - 87 BCE
Acclaimed Roman general who saved Rome from the brink of collapse.
Reformed army to include the lower classes.
Made the army faster by getting rid of slow pack animals
His subordinates were forced to eat his decaying flesh after his death.
Lucius Cornelius Sulla
Military commander under Gaius Maurius, who he eventually had a falling out with.
He forced Maurius’s subordinates to consume his decaying flesh after his death.
