Stylobate
The upper part of a stereobate, the surface on which columns stand.
Column
Vertical cylindrical pillar made up of base, shaft and capital
Shaft
The vertical part of a column between the base and capital
Drum
Cylindrical block forming the shaft part of the column
Fluting/flutes
The vertical grooves on a column
Capital
Crowns column (between the shaft and architrave)
Abacus
Square slab/block in the capital upon which the entablature rests
Echinus
In the Doric order, it is the quarter round moulding beneath the abacus of the capital
Necking
The narrow moulding separating the capital from the shaft
Entablature
The “roof” supported by columns. It is divided into the architrave, frieze and cornice.
Architrave
The horizontal slab, base of entablature which rests on columns
Frieze
Between the architrave and cornice, decorated with relieve sculpture in ionic and corinthian orders or metopes or triglyphs in Doric order.
Triglyphs
Three parallel grooves
Metopes
Square space sometimes adorned with relief carving.
Cornice
The base of the pitched roof, uppermost part of entablature
