Who had the final word in who a woman is allowed to marry?
The father of the woman always made the decision as to who his daughter should marry.
Why were women denied the right to education?
Because they were deemed not worthy. Men may have also wanted to have complete control over women so they couldn’t rebel against them, and by ensuring that they cannot read or write guarantees that they would not have the capability to do so.
What did women traditionally wear to their wedding?
They wore the colour red, which symbolises happiness and luck.
What were some of the hazards of having bound feet?
Some of the hazards include:
- Not enough blood circulation causes the toes to fall off.
- You can lacerate you soles with not properly cut toenails which could cause infection.
- You could potentially die from many of these infections.
How long did it generally take until the foot was successfully mutated into 3-4 inches?
Around about two years.
Was foot binding exclusively for the noble or wealthy families?
It was believed that a bound foot was a sign of nobility; however peasant women’s feet were bound in the hope they would find a more affluent man and in turn lead a better life.
Which philosopher began the belief of men’s superiority to women?
Confucius began this belief through his teachings. However, he did teach that women were to be respected in their role as mother.
