Ancestor
A person who is descended to you; older than a grandparent
Civil Service
A system or method of appointing government employees on the basis of competitive examinations, rather than by knowing someone.
Confucianism
A system of beliefs and rules of behavior taught by Confucius.
Currency
Something that is used as a form of exchange; money
Export
To ship items to other countries or places for sales or exchange.
Extended Family
One’s family including aunt’s, uncles, cousins, and in-laws
Heritage
Something that is passed down from preceding generations ; something inherited at birth such as, personal characteristics, status, and possessions.
Huang He River Valley
A river found in Northern China that carries yellow loess to its delta. The valley is the land that surrounds the river that is filled with fertile soil and perfect for farming. Also, the site of the first civilization that evolved in ancient China. `
Import
To bring in merchandise/items from a foreign country for use.
Legalism
The political practice giving the government or monarchy strict legal control over all activities.
Legend
A traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but not proven to be the truth.
Loess
Yellow-brown soil from the Huang River that helped make farming possible. (silt)
Mandate of Heaven
A law order that gives the Chinese emperors the right to rule based on the command or request of the Gods.
Middle Kingdom
The Chinese empire formed the belief that it lay at the center of the Earth; the original 18 provinces of China.
Oracle
Priest or priestess acting as a medium through whom advice or prediction was sought from the gods.
