Filial Piety
Respect shown by children for their parents and elders.
Daoism
Philosophy based on the ideas of the Chinese thinker Laozi, who taught that people should be guided by a universal force called the Dao.
Laozi
Believed that the government should do as little as possible and leave the people alone. He thought that people could do little to influence the outcome of events.
Yin and Yang
In Chinese thought, the two powers that govern the natural rhythms of life.
Han Dynasty
A Chinese Dynasty that ruled from 202 B.C. to A.D. 9 and again from A.D. 23 to 220.
Liu Bang
One of Xian Yu’s generals. Turned against Yu and fought their final battle in 202 B.C. Liu Bang won and declared himself first emperor of the Han Dynasty.
Wudi
Liu Bang’s great grandson. Reigned from 141 to 87 B.C. Called the “Martial Emperor” because he adopted the policy of expanding the Chinese empire through war.
Centralization (Centralized Government)
A government in which power is concentrated in a central authority to which local governments are subject.
Assimilation
The adoption of a conqueror’s culture by a conquered people.
Silk Road
A system of ancient caravan routes across Central Asia, along which traders carried silk and other trade goods.
