Ancient China was called the “middle kingdom” because they thought they were the center of the universe. They didn’t know better because they were cut off from the rest of the world.

Civilizations first settled here. Nicknamed “China’s sorrow” “yellow river” because of yellow-brown loess found in the river.
Family Names
First civilization to use two names. Family name was said first, then first name.
Confucius
Ancient Chinese philosopher, China’s first
accepted poor students, even if they couldn’t pay
Known as Kong Fu Zi, of Master Kong.
Tried to convince ruler to accept his teachings.
Confucianism
Goal- order in society
Believed: if people could be taught to behave properly, peace would follow
Relationships were a big thing
Impact: civil service (exams for jobs)
