An Ancient African empire formed when the state of Mali conquered Ghana that built its power from gold and salt trade.

Ghana was the first great trading empire in West Africa. It was located in the Sahel (mostly grassland stretched across north central Africa.
What was the Songhai Empire?
After Mansa Musa died Songhai broke away from Mali rule. They took over Timbuktu and expanded to the salt mines, soon controlling all of them.
