Anchors Flashcards
Define a bombproof anchor
A Bombproof anchor is an unquestionably sound anchor, capable of supporting the entire
rope rescue system, as well as any shock load, with no possibility of failure.
Examples:
- Large building structures such as structural girders
- Large boulders of dense rock with a secure placement
Define a Substantial Anchor
A substantial anchor is a good quality anchor capable of supporting the load but is not considered suitable for the entire system. This anchor may have half the load movement system connected to it, being one of the two (2) lines in a rope rescue system.
Define a Marginal Anchor
A marginal anchor has insufficient strength to be considered substantial. Several Marginal anchors may be required to produce a substantial anchor system.
Examples:
- Brick and mortar parapets and chimneys
- Vent pipes
- Handrails and stanchions
- Artificial protection devices (Pro) placed into structural elements or natural rock features
Types of Anchors
- Structural (e.g., column, pillar, beam, doorway, wall).
- Engineered (e.g., eye bolt, davit arm).
- Natural (e.g., rock, bollard, chock stone, tree).
- Artificial (e.g., PRO including wedges, nuts and cams).
- Earth (e.g., picket, stake).
- Vehicle (e.g., under-cab, chassis sub-frame, wheel).
Minimum strength rating of engineered anchors
Rope Access use: 12Kn
Fall Arrest (1 person): 15Kn
Fall Arrest (2 person): 21Kn
