Anatonmy 7 muscular system Flashcards
Fascicles
Small bundles of muscle fibers
Sarcomere
Arranged in series within the myofibril, extends from Z line to Z line.
Tendon
Cordlike structure that attaches muscle to bone.
T-Tubules
An extension of the sacrolemma that penetrates into the interior of the muscle
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum
Structure within the sarcomere that stores calcium
Aponeurosis
Flat, sheet like fascia that attaches muscle to muscle or muscle to bone
Actin
Thin filament that extends from Z lines toward the center of the sarcomere
Myosin
Thick Filament that forms crossbridges with the thin filaments
Muscle fiber
Another name for muscle cell
Sarcolemma
Another name for the cell membrane
Frontalis
Flat muscle that raises the eyebrows and wrinkles the forehead
Masseter
A chewing muscle that works synergistically with the temporalis muscle to close the jaw
Zygomaticus
The smiling muscle
Deltoid
Abducts the arm into the “scarecrow” position. Also known as the shoulder pads
Triceps Brachii
Antagonist to the biceps brachii. Located on the posterior side of the humerus
Buccinator
Flattens the cheeks as in blowing into a trumpet.
Trapezius
Moves the head back as in looking at the sky. Also shrugs the shoulders
Temporalis
Flat, Fan shaped muscle that extends from the temporal bone to the mandible
Brachialis
Synergetic to the biceps brachii
Latissimus Dorsi
Large, flat muscle of the mid- to lower back, allows you to point behind you.
Sternocleidomastoid
Attaches to the breastbone, collarbone, and temporal bone. Also the muscle colprit in torticollis
Pectiralis Major
Large muscle on the anterior chest
Diaphragm
Dome-shaped muscle that seperates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
Adductors
Large muscles located along the medial part of the thigh; horse back riders use these muscles to grip the horse with their thighs
Abdominal
Includes the internal obliques, external obliques, transversus, and the rectus
Gluteus Maximus
Largest muscle in the body that forms most of the buttocks
Quadriceps Femoris
A group of muscles located on the anterior thigh; extends the leg. Includes the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis and vastus medialis
Gastrocnemius
With the help of the achilles tendon this muscle attaches to the heel. The large calf muscle that is used in plantar flexion
Hamstrings
The muscle group on the posterior thigh; it acts antagonistically to the quadriceps femoris muscle group
Tibialis Anterior
Muscle that dorsflexes the foot,
