Anatomy- The skin Flashcards
What are the 8 functions of the skin?
- Physical protection
- Control of evaporation
- Sensory
- Absorption
- Manufacture of Vitamin D
- Thermoregulation
- Storage and synthesis
- Excretion
What cells are part of the adaptive immune system in the skin?
Langerhans
What type of barrier does the skin provide to reduce fluid loss in control of evaporation?
Semi-permeable
What type of absorption is a route of exposure for bioactive substances such as medications?
dermal
What is synthesized in the skin upon exposure to UV radiation?
Vitamin D3
What does the skin act as a storage center for?
Lipids and water
What do sweat glands excrete through skin pores?
perspiration
What is the epidermis in the skin also known as?
stratified squamous keratinising epithelium
What type of tissue does the dermis in the skin consist of?
irregular connective
What does the hypodermis in the skin consist of?
Connective and adipose tissue
What is the meaning of stratified squamous keratinising epithelium?
- Stratified: Nature of Layers of cells
- Squamous: flattened cuboidal cell shape
- Keratinising: means to be changed into a form of keratin, protecting epithelial layers from damage.
- Epithelium tissue is one of the four main tissues responsible for lining organs.
Where is there a major blood supply in the skin?
In the hypodermis and some loops in the dermis. However, NO BLOOD SUPPLY in the epidermis. Hence, diffusion occurs here.

What does the stratum corneum (uppermost layer of skin) have?
Dead keratinocytes. In only some skin is a layer called the stratum granulosum (usually in thick skin only).
