What is the mediastinum and what are its divisions?

The mediastinum is the collection of structures which are found in the centre of the thorax. It is further subdivided for descriptive purposes.  The divisions are:
superior
anterior
middle
posterior

A

The mediastinum has the lungs and pleura lateral to it, and the diaphragm can be found inferiorly.
