standing erect, head facing forward (anteriorly), eyes directed forward, arms by side, palms facing forward and thumbs lateral and feet together and toes directed forward
supine position
lying on back with face and toes upward, generally for anterior dissections
prone position
body is horizontal facing downwards, generally used for back dissection
superior
towards the head
inferior
towards the feet
cranial
towards the head
caudal
towards the tail bone

towards the front of the body

towards the back of the body

towards the belly

towards the back
medial
closer to the midline
lateral
further away from the midline

vertical plane passing longitudinally through the midline

not directly on the median
frontal (coronal)
vertical plane which runs from side to side
transverse (horizontal)
plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions
