A structure that lies close to the body.
What is meant by a distal structure?
Structures that lie further away from the body.
What is meant by the term Cranial?
Structures that lie towards the head (cranium).
What is meant by the term Caudal?
Structures that lie towards the tail.
What is meant by the term Dorsal?
Structures or positions that lie towards the back of the head or tail (towards the spine).
What is meant by the term ventral?
Structures that lie towards the belly.

When referring to position of digits, away from the axis of the limb.
What does the term Rostral mean?
When referring to a structure that lies on the head, towards the muzzle.
What does the term aboral mean?
When referring to a structure that lies on the head, away from the muzzle and towards the ears.
