Anatomy: Skin Chapter 5 Flashcards
Epidermis
Stratified Squamous Keratinized Epithelium. Thickness of this lay varies.
Integumentary means?
Skin
Dermis
Dense Irregular Fibrous CT. Blood vessels are also present in the dermis.
Hypodermis
Is mostly adipose tissue, Alison called subcutaneous tissue. This tissue is continuous with the superficial fascia- the fibrous connective tissue attaching the skin the muscles and other organs.
What type of cells are in the epidermis?
Keratinocytes - the majority of the epidermal cells, these cells contain large amounts of the cytoskeleton protein called keratin, arranged in fibrous bundles.
Melanocytes - spider snapped cells that synthesize the black pigment molecule melanin. Melanin is packed in granular (called melanosomes) which are distributed along the cytoskeleton and transferred to keratinocytes.
Dendritic - these cells work with the immune system to ingest
Tactile- these cells are associated with a dendrite extended from a neuron to form a tactile disk. They respond to physical force, or touch.

Areolar tissue
Loose connective tissue in hypodermis
Tactile
these cells are associated with a dendrite extended from a neuron to form a tactile disk. They respond to physical force, or touch.
Stratum Basale of epidermis
Contains a single layer of columnar cells actively dividing my mitosis to produce cells that migrate into the upper epidermal layers and ultimately to the surface of the skin.
Stratum Spinosum of epidermis
Contains 8-10 layers of cells connected by Desmosomes. These cells are moderately active in mitosis.
Stratum Granulosum of epidermis
Contains two to four layers of cells held together by desmosomes. These cells contain keratohyaline granules, which contribute to the formation of keratin in the upper layers of the epidermis.
Stratum Lucidum of epidermis
Contains two to three layers of enucleated cells. This layer is found only in “thick skin” such as the palm of your hand and the sole of your feet.
Stratum Corneum of epidermis
Contains many layers of dead, enucleated keratinocytes completely filled with keratin. The outer most layers a consistently shed.
