Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
What is the outermost layer of the skin called?
The Epidermis (The part that you can see)
Explain what the epidermis is made up of?
The Epidermis is made from epithelial tissue and does not have a blood supply of its own. It is made up of 5 layers.
Name the 5 layers of the Epidermis?
- Stratum Corneum
- Stratum Lucidum
- Stratum Granulosum
- Stratum Spinosum
- Stratum Germinativum

What is Stratum Corneum?
The outer layer of the skin, this is made up of scale like cells that are continuously shed (corn flakes)
What are the main 3 layers of the skin?
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Subcutaneous Layer
What is the Stratum Lucidum?
This is made up of small transparent cells through which light can pass. This layer is only present in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
What is Stratum Granulosum?
This layer is usually 1-3 layers thick. The cells have distinctive granules and keratin is produced in this layer.
What is Stratum Spinosum?
This layer is 3-6 layers thick and the cells are constantly dividing.
What is Stratum Germinativum?
A single basal layer of cells, which contain the Melanocytes that produce the pigment melanin. The cells of the epidermis are produced in this layer and each has a distinct nucleus. These cells divide continuously by a process known as Mitosis.
Where are Melanocytes located?
They are interposed between the cells of the Stratum Germinativum
The Dermis contains what 3 specialised cell types?
- Fibroblasts
- Microphages
- Mast Cells
Arteries (Arterioles) carry what type of blood?
Oxygenated blood
Veins (Venules) carry what type of blood?
De-Oxygenated Blood
What are the main functions of the skin? SHAPESD
- Sensation
- Heat Regulation
- Absorption
- Protection
- Excretion
- Secretion
- Vitamin D Production
What does congenital mean?
From birth
