The Integumentary System
What is the Integumentary System ?
The integumentary
system is composed of the skin and
its accessory organs: sweat glands,
sebaceous glands, hair, and nails.
What are the three main skin layers?
epidermis, dermis, and
subcutaneous tissue
What are the two types of sweat glands the skin contains?
sebaceous glands, sudoriferous glands
What do the sebaceous glands, and sudoriferous glands do ?
The sebaceous glands are sweat glands and the sudoriferous glands are oil glands, Both participate in the function of the skin.
What are some other accessory organs and what do the do ?
The hair is one and nails another. The hair helps with body temperature regulation. the nails serves as protection for the end of the digits (fingers, toes)
What do the different nerve receptors allow the skin to feel ?
Sense pain, pressure, heat, cold, touch.
What is the function of the skin ?
: The function of the skin is to protect the body from external factors (sun, mechanical
harm, pathogens, etc.). It also houses many accessory organs that maintain the health of the skin itself
as well as serve numerous unique functions for the body.
What are some protective functions of the skin?
protection, housing of nerve receptors, secretion of fluids, and temperature regulation.
