Anatomy of the Vine Flashcards
Name the four sections of a vine
Shoots, one year old wood, permanent wood, roots
Name the 5 structures of the canopy of a vine
Buds, leaves, lateral shoots, tendrils, inflorescences/grape bunches,
What are compound buds?
Formed one season, break out following season.
Produce shoots next growing season.
Primary bud (main growing point).
Secondary, tertiary buds (only used if primary bud damaged)
What are prompt buds?
Form and break open in same growing season.
Form on primary shoot (from compound bud).
Produce lateral shoots
Describe lateral shoots and their main function
Grow from prompt buds.
Main function- allow plant to carry on growing if tip of primary shoot been damaged/eaten.
Can provide additional leaves for photosynthesis.
Useful if near tip of primary shoot- sunlight.
Near base= bad- airflow.
Name the components of a grape and what they contain
Pulp- acids, water, sugars, aroma compounds and precursors
Skin- tannin, colour compounds, aroma cs & ps
Seeds- oils, tannins, embryo
Describe one-year old wood
Shoots from previous growing season.
Supports compound buds that will break to release shoots for upcoming growing season
Cane/Spur
Why are roots important?
Anchor the vine.
Store of carbohydrates
Uptake water and nutrients
Produce hormones important for vine growth and grape ripening
Distribution of roots- cultivation, soil properties, rootstocks, irrigation.
