Anatomy of the eye Flashcards
Name of the area where the cornea and sclera meet
Cornoscleral junction aka the limbus
What lines the 4 walls of the orbit?
Periosteum
What are the layers of the eyelids?
1 Skin 2 Subcutaneous tissue 3 Obicularis oculi 4 Orbital Septum and tarsal plates 5 Smooth muscle 6 Conjunctiva
What are the tarsal plates made of?
Dense connective tissue
What is contained in the tarsal plates?
The meibomian glands
What are the layers of the sclera?
1 Episclera
2 Stroma
3 Lamina fusca
What’s the function of the sclera?
The sclera is a site of attachment for the extra-ocular muscles of the eye
What are the ‘parts’of the conjunctiva?
- The palpebral conjunctiva which lines the cornea
2. The bulbar conjunctiva which lines the sclera
What are the layers of the cornea?
1 Epithelium 2 Bowmans layer 3 Stroma 4 Descemets membrane 5 The endothelium
What is the function of the cornea?
To refract light entering the eye
What does the spiral of tilaux do?
Describes how far from the limbus each muscle from the rectus inserts on the sclera
Where is the anterior chamber?
Its in the Space between the cornea and the iris
Where is the posterior chamber?
Its in the space between the posterior surface of the iris and the retina
What are the parts of the lens?
1 Elastic capsule
2 Lens epithelium
3 Lens fibres
What keeps the lens suspended?
the zonules
Function of the lens?
Takes part in refracting mechanism of the eye
What is the cliliary body made of?
Ciliary epithelium and ciliary muscle
What does the ciliary epithelium do?
Produces aques humor
What does the ciliary body do?
Plays a role in accomodation
What is the function of the choroid?
It transmits arteries from the back of the eye to the front
What is the nervous layer of the eye?
The retina
Whats the dual blood supply of the retina?
Centra retinal artery and the choroidal circulation
Where is the highest concentration of cones?
The fovea
Where is the ‘blind spot’?
Its at the optic disk where there are no rods and cones
How many extra-ocular muscles do we have
6
Medial rectus, lateral rectus, superior oblique, inferior oblique, superior rectus and inferior rectus
