Anatomy of the cell Flashcards
What is the function of the plasmalemma (cell membrane?
separates cytoplasm from outside environment creating a barrier
What is the function of mitochondria?
site of aerobic respiration?
What are the point of cristae of the mitochondria?
increase surface area
What is the function of the RER?
covered in ribosomes so have a role in protein synthesis
what is the function of the SER?
synthesis of lipids
what is the function of the golgi apparatus?
process and package proteins
What are the 3 components of the cytoskeleton?
microfilaments, intermediate filaments, microtubules
What type of intracellular junction prevents diffusion?
occluding junctions
What do communicating junctions do?
allow selective diffusion between adjacent cells
Describe how you would prepare specimens for light/electron microscopy
- tissue gets fixed then finely sliced
- impregnate tissue with support material
e. g.wax - thin slices cut on microtone and put on slides
- wax washed out and tissue rehydrated
name the 4 basic tissue types?
epithelium
connective
Nervous
muscles
where do you tend to find epithelium?
covering surfaces, lining organs
what do granular epithelia do?
produce secretory products
Give examples of soft connective tissue?
tendons
ligaments
dermis
Give examples of hard connective tissue?
cartilage
Name the 3 different types of muscles you get?
skeletal
cardiac
smooth
What type of tissue is bone?
connective tissue
What does mucosa consist of?
- epithelium
- lamina propria (loose connective tissue)
- muscularis (thin smooth muscle)
What is submucosa?
loose connective tissue
What is the muscularis extrema consist of?
2 thick layers of smooth muscle
What is the serosa/adevntitia?
outer layer of connective tissue
What lines the alveoli?
squamous epithelium
What is another name for simple squamous epithelium?
endothelium
what are capillaries mainly composed of?
endothelial cells and basal lamina
