Anatomy Of The Brain Flashcards
Which brain controls primitive, basic functions?
Hindbrain
Which part of the brain is the Medulla?
Hindbrain
Where is the Pons?
Hindbrain, just above the Medulla
Where is the Cerebellum?
Hindbrain, at back of brainstem
What does the Medulla control?
Heart Rate & Breathing
What can happen if Medulla activity is surpassed?
Heart or respiratory failure (due to alcohol or drugs)
What do we also call the Medulla?
The neuronal motorway
What does the Pons do? (3)
Relay Centre, respiratory control & sleep regulation
What does the Cerebellum control? (M)
Movement (timing & coordination)
What can affect the Cerebellum?
Alcohol (affects timing/coordination)
Where is the Midbrain?
ABOVE the Hindbrain
What is the Midbrain?
A cluster of sensory/motor neurons
What does the Midbrain do?
It’s a relay centre for eyes and ears in particular
What does damage to the Midbrain do?
Irreversible Coma
What is the most important part of the Midbrain?
Reticular Formation
What is the Reticular Formation?
Most important part of the Midbrain, gatekeeper for information passing to the Forebrain
What does the Reticular Formation do? 3 answers
- Gatekeeper for information
- Focuses attention
- Affects sleep states
Where is the Forebrain?
Above the midbrain / the most forward part
What is the Forebrain
The most evolved part which contains the entire cerebrum & several structures
What does the Cerebrum look like?
Two hemispheres, left and right
What covers the cerebrum?
The cortex
What lies within the Cerebrum hemispheres?
Many important structures
What is the Cortex?
A thin layer that covers the cerebrum, which has four lobes (F, O, P, T)
What percentage of the human brain does the cortex make up?
80%
