Anatomy of Respiratory system Flashcards
What are the muscles of Inspiration?
Diaphragm and external intercostals. When the diaphragm contracts, chest expands downward and elevates lower ribs. When intercostals contract the ribs are elevated and A-P diameter of chest increases.
What are the accessory muscles of inspiration?
SCM, scalenes, pec major, pec minor, and SA
What are the muscles of Exhalation?
Exhalation results from passive recoil of the lungs and rib cage. Forced expiration requires the RA, external oblique, internal oblique, and TA to depress the lower ribs.
Components of Upper Respiratory Tract
nasal cavity, pharynx and larynx. These passages humidify, cool, or warm inspired air and filter air.
Components of Lower Respiratory Tract
Trachea and Lungs. Within the lungs there are branches that help conduct air.
How many lobes does each lung have?
R has 3 (superior, middle, and inferior) and L has 2 (superior and inferior)
Pleurae
A membranous sac that covers each lung. The visceral pleura covers the surface of the lungs. The parietal pleura covers the inner surfaces of the chest wall.
Pneumothorax
when the pleural space contains air which can compress lung and cause pulmonary distress
Hemothorax
when the pleural space contains blood which can compress lung and cause pulmonary distress
