Anatomy of memory and emotion Flashcards
What is episodic memory?
Remembering events, conversations and experiences
What is encoding
putting information into short term memory
What is consolidation
putting short term memory information into long term memory
what is recall
retrieving information from long term memory
What is the key area in episodic memory?
hippocampus in the medial temporal lobe
what is the pathway for consolidation?
hippocampus-fornix-mammillary bodies - anterior thalamus
What handles the parts of a memory?
the neocortical sensory areas (as for perception, imagery). The parahippocampal gyrus links the hippocampus to the neocortex
what links the hippocampus to the neocortex
parahippocampal gyrus
what modulates episodic memory in terms of emotion?
the amygdala
what modulates episodic memory in terms of attention?
the anterior cingulate gyrus
What is semantic memory?
conceptual understanding, knowledge, categorising, information
what does the anterior temporal cortex do in semantic memory?
links together different parts of a concept
What categorises visual perceptions?
the posterior inferior temporal cortex
What does the posterior inferior temporal cortex do in regards to semantic memory?
categorises visual perceptions
What do the neocortical sensory areas do in semantic memory?
Handle the parts of a concept
What does the amygdala do in emotion?
responsible for the experience of emotion or the evaluation of affective relevance. in both negative and positive emotion but especially negative e.g. fear
What does the ventral frontal cortex do in emotion?
regulates emotion and puts it in context
The lateral ventral frontal cortex responds to outside situations and the medial deals with feelings at the time
What does the hippocampus do in emotion?
learns emotional relevance and recalls emotion
what does the hypothalamus do in emotion?
prepares for a response, associates with autonomic nervous system
What is the anterior insula responsible for?
visceral feelings
what does the anterior cingulate do in emotion?
links amygdala to the cortex, and is responsible for emotionally-directed attention
What are aminergic/cholinergic nuclei responsible for?
Emotional arousal
Where is reward experienced
nucleus accumbens (ventral striatum), amygdala
what happens in the ventral tegmental area?
reward is learnt
