Anatomy of Denture bearing Area - mandible Flashcards
What are the anatomy limiting structures in the mandibular arch?
tongue
glands
mylohyoid muscles
bony prominence where the muscles attach
sulcus depth lingually
Mylohyoid line/ridge?
What effects the depth of the ant. lingual sulcus?
mentalis muscle
When you record the depth of a sulcus, do you measure functional depth or anatomical depth?
functional
Name the areas
Name the areas
Where does the buccal shelf lie?
between the alveolar ridge and the external oblique ridge
extends form the buccal frenum to retromolar pad
What does the buccal shelf support?
the distal part of the lower denture
buccal shelf for denture support?
primary stress baring area for denture
need to capture accurately for denture stability
needed for good peripheral seal
What happens to the alveolar bone after extraction?
resorbs
losing buccal support

What is the pear-shaped pad?
areas just anterior to the retromandibular pad, it is dense, fibrous CT
lingual tuberosity
lingula
Where is the lingual tuberosity?
bony prominence at the end of mylohyoid line
Why are the genial tubercles important?
considering extremely resorbed mandibular ridges
Can the mental foramen/nerve interfere with denture?
yes, if bone resorption is extreme
What areas can the mylohyoid ridge have an effect on denture?
the muscles has an indirect effect on anterior lingual border up to second premolar and direct effect on posterior lingual border in molar region
How can the sublingual gland interfere with a denture?
in premolar region, when the mouth is raised, the gland comes close to the crest of the ridge and reduces the vertical space available for the extension of the flange in this region
What is the retromylohyoid space (lingual space) important for in RPD?
RETENTION AND STABILITY
