Anatomy of Cardiovascular system Flashcards
Description of atria and what it does?
3 points
Upper chamber of heart,
Receive blood coming back to heart from the body or lungs.
Right atrium receives deoxygenated blood, left atrium receives oxygenated blood.
Description of ventricles and what it does?
3 points
Pumping chambers of heart, thicker walls.
Right ventricle pumps blood to pulmonary circulation for the lungs
Left ventricle pumps blood to systemic circulation for the body and muscles.
Description of bicuspid valve and what it does?
2 points
Between the left atrium and left ventricle
Allows blood to flow in one direction and prevents blood flowing back.
Description of tricuspid valve and what it does?
2 points
Between the right atrium and right ventricle
Allows blood to flow only in one direction and prevents blood flowing back.
Description of semilunar valve and what it does?
2 points
Between left ventricle and aorta, prevents blood from back flow.
Between right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Description of chordae tendineae and what it does?
2 point
Connected to the bicuspid and tricuspid valves, Prevent valves turning inside out.
Description of septum?
1 point
Separates the two upper chambers, the right and left atria.
Function of the arteries?
1 point
Carry blood away from the heart and carry oxygenated blood.
Description of the arteries?
2 points
Thick muscular walls carry blood at high speeds under high pressure
Do not need valves, expect where the pulmonary artery leaves the heart
Function of the veins?
3 points
Allows deoxygentaed blood to the heart
Blood reaches veins its flowing slowly under low pressure
Contract muscles push the thin walls inwards to squeeze blood towards heart
Description of veins?
2 points
Thinner walls than arteries and large diameter
Close to the surface and can be seen under skin
Function of the capillaries?
3 points
Allow diffusion of oxygen and nutrients needed by the body cells
Pressure of blood higher than veins, but less than arteries
Walls one cell thick to allow oxygen, nutrients+ waste products to pass through
Description of capillaries?
2 points
Smallest of all blood vessels
Narrow and thin
What is the lymphatic system and what does it do?
3 points
Transporting a clear watery fluid known as lymph
Lymph contains white blood cells, bacteria and other cells
Helps the body get rid of fluid and waste products though excretion of urine+ faeces.
