ANATOMY OF BONY PELVIS: LABOUR & TRAUMA Flashcards
What are the functions of the body pelvis?
To support the upper body Transference of weight - sitting (vertebral column to ischial tuberosities) - standing (vertebral column to femurs) Attachment for muscles Attachment for external genitalia Protection of pelvic organs Passage for childbirth
What does the bone pelvis consist of?
2 hip bones - each is a fusion between the ilium (superior), ischium (posterior inferior) and pubis (anterior). Fuse together in the acetabulum
Sacrum
Coccyx
Bones join together in the anterior midline at the pubic symphysis
What is the pelvic girdle?
A grey area (ish!!)
It is the hip bone and sacrum although some use it interchangeably with bony pelvis
Describe the parts of ilium
Anteriorly = Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS). One of the attachment points for the inguinal ligament
The iliac crest follows around to the PSIS
The iliac fossa is filled with muscle - the attachment point for the ilacus muscle
Where is the ischium located in relation to the ilium?
It is a much smaller bone, located posteriorly
