Anatomy (not Diagrams) Flashcards
Within what hollow does the pituitary gland sit and what bone is this a part of?
Middle cranial fossa- sphenoid bone
How is the optic chiasm related to the pituitary gland?
The optic chiasm lies inferior to the pituitary gland
Which lobe of the pituitary gland is larger?
The anterior lobe
What is the function of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland?
Glandular- manufactures numerous hormones
What is the function of the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland?
Secretes neurohormones made by the hypothalamus
How does the hypothalamus communicate with the anterior and posterior pituitary?
Anterior pituitary- through hormones transported in the blood stream
Posterior pituitary- through neurons
Which strap muscles overlie the thyroid glands?
Sternothyroid
Sternohyoid
Omohyoid
At what vertebral levels is the thyroid gland located?
C5-T1
Between which cartilage/tracheal rings is the thyroid gland located?
Between the fifth carriage and sixth tracheal rings
Where does the isthmus lie in relation to the tracheal rings?
Opposite the 2nd to 4th tracheal rings
Which nerves supply the muscles of the vocal cords?
The recurrent and inferior laryngeal nerves
Which arteries do the inferior and superior thyroid arteries arise from?
Superior thyroid arises from external carotid artery
Inferior thyroid arises from the thyrocervical trunk
Into what veins do the superior, middle and inferior thyroid veins drain?
Superior and middle thyroid veins-internal jugular vein
Inferior thyroid vein- braciocephalic vein
What is the arterial supply and venous drainage of the parathyroid glands?
Arterial supply- inferior thyroid arteries
Venous drainage- veins draining the thyroid
How are the suprarenal glands peritonised?
Retroperitoneal
