Anatomy: brain - meninges (dural septa and sinuses) Flashcards
DURAL SEPTA
What are they?
Where the periosteal dura separates from the meningeal dura; and the meningeal dura forms a fold (usually double, sometimes single)
(Eg. falx cerebri in this picture)
DURAL SEPTA
Falx cerebri
- Double or single layer of meningeal dura?
- Where does it lie?
- What are its attachments (anterior, posterior, superior?)
- What is it continuous with?
Double layer of meningeal dura
Within the longitudinal fissure, between the two cerebral hemispheres
Anterior: crista galli; posteriorly: internal occipital protuberance; superiorly: internal sagittal suture
Falx cerebelli
DURAL SEPTA
Falx cerebelli
- Is it a single or double layer?
- Where does it lie?
- What is it continuous with?
Double layer of meningeal dura
Lies in the midline between the two cerebellar hemispheres
The falx cerebri
DURAL SEPTA
Tentorium cerebelli
- Is it a single or double layer?
- Where does it lie?
- What are its attachments?
- What is its opening? What does this house?
Double layer of meningeal dura
In the transverse fissure (between the occipital lobes and cerebellum)
Anterior: clinoid processes (sphenoid), lateral: petrous portion of temporal bone; posteriorly: occipital bone
The tentorial notch/fissure; the midbrain
DURAL SEPTA
Diaphragm sella
- Is it a single or double layer?
- What does it cover?
- It has an opening within it - what does this enable the passage of?
Single layer of dura
The sella turcica
The infundibulum of the pituitary
DURAL SINUSES
What are they?
Spaces between the periosteal and meningeal dura, where venous blood collects.
DURAL VENOUS SINUSES
What are the sinuses associated with the falx cerebri?
The superior + inferior sagittal sinus
DURAL VENOUS SINUS
What sinus occurs at the junction of the great cerebral vein and the inferior sagittal sinus?
At the junction of which two septa does it run along?
The straight sinus
The falx cerebri and the tentorium cerebelli
DURAL VENOUS SINUS
What sinus occurs when the straight sinus and the superior sagittal sinus converge?
What structure is this sinus located at?
The confluence of sinuses
The internal occipital protuberance
DURAL VENOUS SINUS
- What sinuses arise from the confluence of sinuses?
- What dural septa does it run within?
- What bony structure helps deepen the pathwa of this sinus?
The transverse sinuses
The tentorium cerebelli
Bony grooves of the occipital bone
DURAL VENOUS SINUSES
The transverse sinus then splits into which sinus?
At what point does this split occur?
The sigmoid sinus
Where the occipital bone merges with the petrous portion of the temporal bone
DURAL VENOUS SINUSES
Sigmoid sinus
- It exits the cranium as what vein?
The internal jugular vein
DURAL VENOUS SINUS
Cavernous sinus
- The cavernous sinus is deep to which dural septa?
The diaphragm sellae
DURAL VENOUS SINUSES
Superior petrosal sinus:
- Connects which sinsues?
The transverse sinus and the cavernous sinus
DURAL VENOUS SINUSES
Inferior petrosal sinus:
- Connects which sinus to which structure?
The cavernous sinus to the jugular foramen
