Anatomy Flashcards
Location of the Pituitary
Sella tursica of sphenoid
Just below optic chiasm - can cause visual disturbances if there is a tumor
Pituitary arterial supply
Via superior, middle, and inferior hypophyseal arteries
Branched off of the internal carotid
Venous return to the pituitary
R and L hypophyseal veins to R and L cavernous sinuses
CS -> R and L superior petrosal sinuses -> R and L sigmoid sinuses -> R and L jugular veins
Sphenoid sinus infection
Could be destructive if left untreated bc of thin bone between sphenoid and sella tursica
Infection can lead to pituitary abscess
Adrenal gland location
On top of the kidneys
Separated from thin septal layer of renal fascia
Arterial supply to adrenal glands
Superior, Middle, Inferior Suprarenal arteries
Divide before entering into 50-60 branches
Venous return of adrenal glands
Suprarenal veins
R. Empties into IVC and L. To L renal v
Nerve supply to adrenal cortex
Celiac plexus and splanchnic nerves
Medulla nervous supply
Presynaptic sympathetic fibers
Via spinal cord levels T10-L1
Pancreas location
Head of pancreas in C of duodenum
Tail projects toward LUQ of spleen
Posterior to stomach
Pancreas ducts
Joins common bile to empty into duodenum at ampulla of Vater
Controlling sphincter - Oddi
Pancreas arterial supply
Branches from SPLENIC a. (Body and tail) and branches from GASTRODUODENAL and SUPERIOR MESENTERIC a. (Head and neck)
Pancreas venous drainage
Pancreatic veins to splenic vein and superior mesenteric vein
All into hepatic portal system
Pancreas nervous supply
Vagus and splanchnic nerves
Thyroid gland location
Anterior to trachea and larynx
Isthmus just inferior to cricoid cartilage of larynx and over tracheal cartilage
